External [portable] subwoofer

Does such a thing exists? Basically I'm looking for a slim portable subwoofer that I can carry around with my xps 14.

Like the one in xps 15/17 but with a case and some sort of power source from my lappy. Or even from an electric outlet, as long as it's slim and portable.

I doubt it has much bass, probably sounds more like regular speakers.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TY274ZM/A This one shows as discontinued

Reply 2 : External [portable] subwoofer

Thanks for the links, the second one looks like exactly what I wanted, but the I only found 1 on amazon, it's used and still cost 75bucks. Too bad it's discontinued(maybe because of the price, lol)

Not exactly looking for a speaker+subwoofer as the original speakers on my rig are good enough.

Edit: oh wait, it's 60bucks on the apple store, still a bit pricy. Might purchase it if there's no other substitute, thanks again, zippoman

Probably due to overheating... use HWinfo32 and post your idle and load temps. This is a classic sympton of overheating.

Did you ever update your video BIOS?

Reply 4 : ASUS G73JH Shut It down while I playing...

Those thermal temps are a little high. While the game probably isnt shutting off from throttling, it is a possibility. Irregardless, I would look into repasting and maybe investing in a laptop cooler.

As mentioned above, it could simply be a BIOS update necessity, or a driver problem

Those are more than a little high my friend you have idle temps of 90oC it sounds as though you seriously need a repaste and/or to update your Vbios.

If it is still under warranty get Asus to do it for you.

The difference between games is probably why as Dead Space 2 I find runs 6oC cooler after testing it out a moment ago it requires a lot less processing power than most.

Looks aged and dated but generally an ok game.

I already updated only the BIOS not the VBios. Where Can I get it?.

Reply 9 : ASUS G73JH Shut It down while I playing...

there's no point in updating your vBIOS because its still going to crash. Your temps are too high.. You need to replace the thermal paste on the CPU+GPU.. anyways below is link for vBIOS.

IP Conflicts on wireless network using Windows 7

I'm on the road traveling and am having trouble with receiving an ip conflict error message shortly after connecting my windows 7 laptop to this particular hotels wireless network. Shortly after connecting to the correct access point is when the msg appears. I've checked my wireless adapters IPv4 TCPIP properties and ensured Use DHCP is enabled and that IPv6 is disabled. I've done a release and renew on the address after connecting as well (ipconfig /release and renew)to still no avail. Oddly enough, my internet connection works great in the morning at this hotel but has this problem at night time. Are there any known issues with 7 or such a thing as a Windows 7 "unfriendly" wireless router? I don't have this problem at home on my Linksys wireless router. Works fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Reply 1 : IP Conflicts on wireless network using Windows 7

All the ip conflict means is that someone else is using the IP. Since you have checked your machine it is most likely another machine. Many times it will give you the mac address of the other machine not that it will help any when you don't own the network.

All it takes is someone to hard code a IP the same as yours and you get this message.

You never know if it is intentional or not. Hotel system are rather stupid they secure based on IP. Once a person has authenticated using whatever method it basically puts a rule in their firewall that says allow this ip for a certain time limit. So if I want to use this service unauthorized all I need to do is keep trying IP until I get one that works and hope the other guy using it is no longer online. There are many better methods but they cost and take more skill to maintain so the hotel opts to tolerate some hackers.

MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

Hi all,

I'm a Mac fan in general but lately I'm been using office extensively for work and found the Office for Mac 2011 to be a POS.

I need to buy a new powerhouse laptop and have 2 options:

MBP 15" quad-core with 8GB RAM and a regular HDD or a similarly equipped W520 (when is this thing out btw?)

If I go Mac, I'll still have to run Windows 7 (vmware maybe) on it so I really don't see the point of buying it except having the option of running OS X when I feel like it. OTH, the configuration of W520 is appealing. I love having all those ports, docking station, FHD screen etc.

One thing I noticed about the W520 is the Quadro 2000M. This thing is not for games is it? I'm not a gamer in any means, but would be nice to be able to actually run some graphics extensive games.

TIA for your input.

Cheers.

Reply 1 : MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

Quadros are not for gaming, however there are a myriad of drivers for Quadro cards. You will be able to game, but not have the highest frame rates.

You are comparing an essentially high end multimedia laptop to a mobile workstation laptop. Macbook Pro have always had a crappy cooling system design and cannot do CPU intensive tasks for long before it turns into a portable space heater. By buying the W520 you get a proven mobile workstation.

If you want durability, reliability get the ThinkPad. If you want something that looks pretty...get the Macbook Pro.

Reply 2 : MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

I have a 11" Air and the Sony in the signature. And also a T400 from work. Need a laptop with a big screen so thought a FHD 15.6" would be ideal.

Couldn't care less about looks. I want something that works, and works well. I don't do CAD or graphics stuff so the Quadro is pretty much useless to me. Might be running some games. How good/bad is the Quadro compared to the ATI in the MBP when it comes to games?

Reply 3 : MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

The way I understand Quadros is they go for accuracy of the polygons while GeForce are about massive throughput as fast as possible to get the highest frame rates.

Quadro are based off GeForce cores but run at much lower clock speeds. Again you'll be able to play modern titles but not at highest resolution/detail. You might be able to experiment with different drivers or get modded drivers that will allow GeForce ones to recognize a Quadro chip.

The W520/T520 are good bets then. If you don't really CAD or rendering, then Quadro graphics will only decrease battery life and generate additional heat.

Reply 4 : MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

If you want a thinkpad to play games, go for the w series (even if you cannot play games on highest quality, its better than the t series).

From my perspective, it seems to me as if you want a different windows brand. ie: Asus G73/G71/G51 or a Dell XPS.

If you really want a thinkpad, you can get an external GPU for your thinkpad via express card slot.

Reply 5 : MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

I would wait another month and configure a T520 with the proper hardware you need. Unless you do a lot of CAD work, I wouldn't bother with the W series.

Actually I rarely game, but when paying $2000 I expect to be able to, you know, game. My main use will be vmwares, emails, browsing etc. The most important part is the FHD screen.

I do have a T400 currently from work and I like the build and quality of the Lenovo's. That's why I'm going either Lenovo or MBP.

I don't do CAD at all actually. I want a snappy laptop that could do whatever I throw at it.

The T520 is only dual core though right? How would it do with multiple vmware's running?

Reply 8 : MBP or W520? (and where is the latter?)

The T520 could be quad if you configure it to be quad.

It's probably possible to install GeForce drivers on a Quadro card (AFAIK, the hardware's the same); there was a thread earlier that claimed 30% FPS increase in SC2 on the NVS3100M.

Also, in case you haven't noticed, the 2011 MBP's are overheating and freezing at the moment.

Yeah read the news. I think 10.6.7 addresses that issue though?

And wanted to ask what wait a month? I can configure the T520 right now but there is no quad-core option.

If I do play games, it's gonna be some strategic games, last one I played was Generals by EA if you know that one.

BTW, I did have a 15" MBP pro before, core i7 and 8GB RAM. I wasn't comfortable using the damn thing because of the sharp edges. If I do get a MBP again, I'm so using it with an external keyboard and a mouse. I'm leaning towards the Lenovo though.

Samsung HL-T5687S audio, but no picture

It started yesterday when watching TV, the screen all of a sudden went green and then black with no picture. You can hear the sound but no picture at all. Called Samsung and they said the lamp is probably out so I'm trying to find the part number to buy a replacement lamp but can't find it at all.

Some referenced a sticker on the left side of the TV with the lamp part number but my tv doesn't have one. The only sticker it has is on the right hand side that contains the Model #, Serial # and Version.

I also saw videos of how to replace them on DLP but mine doesn't have a access panel that i've seen on youtube videos that gives you access to the back where the lamp is. Mine has a access panel but it looks to be to some circuit board. Any help is appreciated because if it's a simple fix I would rather replace the lamp my self than pay for a technician to come out and fix it.

G73SW-BST6 initial thoughts review

Hello all recently puchased the asus g73sw-bst6 from best buy i know it has some draw backs but i am a premier silver member so i wanted to see if the bst6 was going to be ok or if the bst8 is worth it. So i thought i would share my thoughts with those who are also considering either of these.

Specs:

Processor i7 2630qm-2.0ghz(turbo boost to 2.9)

Ram: 8gb 1333 mhz ddr3

Hard Drive: 750gb 7200rpm(677 available, 645 with removal of bloatware)

Graphics: Nvidia GTX 460m 1 gb ddr5 VRAM

screen: 17.3" 1600x900 (i know its not the high def one and def hurts it.)

Price: $1,299 before tax

Windows experience scores:

7.4, 7.6, 7.0, 7.0, 5.9 (respecitviely)

My alienware in my sig scores:

7.1, 7.4, 7.2, 7.2, 5.9

Side notes: the blue led under the screen wont turn on is this no longer an option or mine does not work i dont know yet i only recieved it yesterday at about 5:00pm EST also upgraded the 460 drivers to the latest official nvidia ones the 266.58 i believe they are.

Build: Very solid feel the lid is coated in a black matte finish, hinge feels solid, everything fits together nicely no major gaps or creaking, no keyboard flex, it is a very study laptop its heavy no question but its a gaming laptop it will be i dont mind the weight since i am 6'3 300lbs lol. But certainly not something i am going to bring to the office everyday just for home use. MY only isse with the build is that every g73 asus i have tried (had a few g73jh's and one jw) the rubber foot on the right hand side of the laptop closest to you does not touch my desk. every other one does but that one and its just slightly above but you can see a gap. I tried it on my counter and other tables all to the same end. (not a big deal just weird.)

Keyboard & Trackpad: Nice chiclet style keyboard keys have a nice short throw for gaming and the full numberpad is a plus. but it does not feel as nice to type on for word processing. It is the same keyboard on pretty much all the latest g73's with no keyboard flex. The trackpad is nice and the xW models all have the splits mouse buttons which make it much easier to press. Trackpad has a much nicer feel and is easier to use then the one on my alienware although i never use it i always have a mouse plugged in except on the go. One nice feature is when you plug in a mouse it automatically disables the trackpad so you do not accidentally hit it while playing.

Sound: good sound the subwoofer helps a lot definitely fuller sound than my alienware but when i game i use a pair of tritton ax720 so the comps speakers are only for vids on youtube or something.

Battery: I managed to get about 2 hours out of the 67% charge it started with. Have yet to test a full cycle.

Screen: the weakest point i cannot recommend enough the high def screen especially since my alienware has the 1600x900 screen but is smaller so it is definitely worse quality plus the non glossy bothers me but that is just personal preference.

Gaming: Battlefield bad company 2: i average 35-60fps with native res, all settings to high except shadows, 2xaa played very smooth.

MW2: all settings to max was around 45-80fps average

Black ops: kept dropping fps on max high was good around 30-45fps average

SC2: played on ultra with around 30-60fps (very processor intensive game)

I have downloaded the crysis 2 demo and will test that later when i get home.

Overall my alienware performed the same if not better in some games (a bit disappointed.)

Overall: it is a great laptop for those in need for a new laptop, if you have something relatively close in specs i would pass or at least go with the high def screen from best buy in the bst8 model or from somewhere else. but it is a must. and i have no real complaints with the laptop just the screen but i knew that when purchasing it since the bst8 was backordered i wanted to try it.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask it is looking as i will be returning this and waiting for the bst8 or picking up an m17xr3.

Nice review. I'm considering this laptop myself. I have a few questions that I was hoping you could answer. How well does the wireless card perform? Is it dual-band? What security suite was pre-installed? How are the viewing angles color, and contrast on the display? I know it's only 1600X900. I'm more interested in the image quality than the resolution.

Reply 2 : G73SW-BST6 initial thoughts review

Last I checked, the SW doesn't have an LED under the lid.

The wireless card is good not the best but good it also has the built in feature for wimax connectivity which i will never use since this thing is too big to use on the go which is the only place you would really be away from wifi lol.

it was some suite called triton or titan honestly was the first thing i removed since i use norton 360.

viewing angle are not great it really becomes washed out at anything more than about 135 degrees so your constantly adjusting the monitor based how your sitting. trust me though the display is the weakest part the 1600x900 really hurts it. colors are not crisp they are accurate and it has the color setting button by the speakers but not something you would want for high quality images. it just looks washed out even after messing with the settings is it usable o yes and when you are gaming its not as bothersome but wehn just looking at the desktop or web browsing its obvious. i would skip the bst6 and go for the bst8 or the xa1

135 degrees is not that bad. The display on my HP dv5t washes out a bit at the top and bottom when I am looking at center! Let me ask you this. How does your G73 1600X900 display compare other 1600X900 displays? I know 1080P is better but I may have to get 1600X900 and I'm wondering if the one on the G73 is as good as the ones offered by Toshiba, Dell, Hp, etc. I know none of them are great.

the only other 1600x900 display i have is on my m15x and the m15x looks way better because it has the glossy screen, colors are sharper and its about 2" smaller so the pixels are denser. yea the viewing angle is not horrible but you definitely need to keep adjusting the tilt since it washes out more vertically but if your at an angle at the desk as in side to side it is not bad,

I don't remember seeing a code 5 in my FSM.

Can you tell us which terminals you shorted? You should short terminals Tc and E1 on the diagnostics block in the engine bay, 20 seconds after turning on ignition. (Don't crank the car yet, lol)

This gets you the current airbag code. If you short them first then turn on ignition, you get past airbag codes after 20s. There's a difference. Get both if possible.

If you have no codes, the airbag light will then blink twice per second constantly.

If you have code(s), from the FSM:

Quote:

The first blinking output indicates the first digit of a 2-digit DTC. After a 1.5-second pause, the second blinking output will indicate the second digit.

If there are 2 or more codes, there will be a 2.5-second pause between each code. After all the codes have been output, there will be a 4.0-second pause and they will all be repeated.

If there are more than one codes, indication will start from the smallest numbered code.

Read the code again and post back, and I'll tell you how to clear it.

You seem very experienced - would you be able to explain my situation:

the AB light is slowly flashing after the engine start, and dealership pulled several diag codes - 15, 43, 44, and 48. They say that they have to start with replacing the center AB sensor ($640) and then retest. They say that the a-bags may or may not deploy and that the job may end up with replacing all squibs (3), which will lead to thousands $$...

I am wondering if the flashing is due to some simpler problem such as a poor contact somewhere, because it does go away for 2-3 days after driving in wet weather. Can it be a bad clock spring or such?

15 = Front (RH) airbag sensor malfunction

43 = Short in RH side squib circuit

44 = Open in RH side squib circuit

48 = Open in LH side squib circuit

Seems like you are one of those lucky bastards who have side airbags, hahaha. (But then you'd have 4 squibs, not 3. If you don't have side airbags, you'd have 2.)

Anything unpleasant happened to your car?

Looks like you have some very bad wiring issues. I can only tell you so much across a forum, and this seems to be one of those issues that will need hours of troubleshooting. However I believe the dealer can try to troubleshoot the wiring before replacing the airbag sensor assembly.

Clockspring is behind steering wheel and isn't the problem.

Reply 4 : Air bag light- 5 flashes 98 Corolla

My codes determined both side airbag modules (forgot the exact two). Unplugging and reseating those connectors will keep the airbag light off for a few weeks, sometimes longer. I havent found a permanent solution as of yet. I have found others with issues with those connectors.

Your car may be too new for the diagnostic short pin to work - you may have to have the ECM scanned by a dedicated scan tool that plugs into the OBD port under the dash, almost directly below the steering wheel.

For the check engine lamp - you have to use a scanner. For the airbag light, you can use the short pin method.

Given you model year - it will have a DLC (Data Link Connector) and follow ISO protocols for communications, to allow you to access the stored code for the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp).

For the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System), you can use the short pin method to query its trouble codes.

That is why I'm confused, your earlier post mentioned "engine" light, where as this new post is on the SRS system. Which lamp is on - the check engine or airbag??

Dell XPS 15 SB - better 525m OC w/notebook cooler?

Just bought a Dell XPS 15 with the 2630qm & 525m graphics (after canceling my HP DV6 order ). I thought about upgrading the XPS 15 graphics to the 540m, but after realizing that the 525m and 540m are both the same chip just running at different speeds I decided to skip the pricy upgrade and overclock.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a notebook cooler they think will keep an oc'd 525m cool and stable while gaming?

Thanks!

Notepal U3 is a good cooler. Cooled both my Studio XPS 1640 and my Dell XPS 15. What are your temperatures so far?

Reply 2 : Dell XPS 15 SB - better 525m OC w/notebook cooler?

Hope you got the 1080p display! Because the standard 720p is terrible quality (not just the resolution, but the color gamut and viewing angles as well). If you got the 720p you'll probably want to cancel your order again because on the XPS 15 the B+RGLED 1920x1080 display is the most important option.

You'll regret the 720p, but the 1080p is one of the best displays currently available.

Hurry and cancel your order fast if you got the 720p because Dell Home&Office customer support is a real hassle when it comes to cancelling orders if you do it too late.

My XPS 15 hasn't shipped yet - want to have the cooler ready for it when it arrives.

Cooling pad might or might not allow you to OC to a higher clock, depends what your temps are.

From my personal experience with my 425 the temp difference between OC and stock clock running furmark under the same conditions is only ~6C. Might be a big deal if your temp is somewhere 90+, but nothing much if it's under 80.

540 should still be better than 525 by nature, thus could OC to a higher clock(correct me if I'm wrong)

Maybe. If the 525 and 540 chips were exactly identical, this would not be true. But it is possible that they binned some chips into the lower-clocked 525 because it was too unstable/hot at 540 speeds.

Reply 6 : Dell XPS 15 SB - better 525m OC w/notebook cooler?

People seem to have really good luck overclocking the 420m / 425m. The 420m, 425m, 435m, 525m, 540m, and 550m are all based on the same chip just running at different speeds and with slightly different memory (400 series has 800 mhz, 500 series has 900mhz). As such I can't imagine that the 525m doesn't have some serious headroom . If I can get my 525m up to or past the 740 / 1480 speeds of the 550m I'll be a happy camper.

Bet I can push that memory speed up from 900mhz to 1000mhz too .

I've only tested 3dmark06 so far, but mine runs without a hitch at 900/980/1800. Gave me over 2K points too. My L501x with the GT 420M ran great with games at 740/960.

Are you using any additional cooling (laptop cooler, etc.) to get those speeds? What are you temps like?

I have a Belkin laptop cooler I bought from dell when I purchased my L501x. It's not that great and I really don't see a difference between temps when using 3dmark06. It's too short of a test.

Remember, the settings I used are only for benchmarking on 3dmark06, and I can practically guarantee you that you won't be able to play games at those speeds.

BX2431 Moniter resolution not stretching to screen edges

Just got BX2431 Moniter for Christmas. 1920x1080 native resolution, and when it's set to that the projected image doesn't reach to the edges of the screen. 1.5inch black rectangle around it. If I set the resolution to another, say, 1600x1200 it does and the picture is worse because it's not my native resolution.

My current videocard is the AT HD4850. In CCC I have the scaling options set to "Overscan" by 15% and this stretched the screen to the full size, but more than often it will recent.
Was just wondering if anybody could help me optimize my moniter for full screen viewing at 1920x1080! Thanks !

G73JH Issues Playing games

So far this mean machine has been very lack luster. I bought this machine for the purpose of gaming (as I am sure most do) yet I have all sorts of problems with many games. I have bought and tried Civ5, Bad Company 2, and Blood Bowl to name the most recent and none work.

Each game I can get to the title screen and that is about it. After that it either stays black or I become frozen and have to ctrl+alt+delete. This is extremely frustrating!!!! Does anyone know the issue? If it was just one game I would blame the game...

The other problem is as follows: The games I can plan (like Company of Heroes, Age of Empires III) are ridiculously small. I understand the screen on this computer is an odd size but I mean the game screen is TINY!

Can anyone please help on either problem. If there is no fix for this I am going to have to start finding out how to get my money back. I did not pay this much money to get a gaming computer that plays only "select games!!! "

Reply 1 : G73JH Issues Playing games

Are you playing it straight out the box with no changes?

Reply 2 : G73JH Issues Playing games

Yeah for the most part... besides automatic updates... Did I miss some big fix/patch? (For the lap top)

The games I have updated as far as I could

I'd refer to the sticky but I would suggest running a clean install of Windows to get rid of the stock poop thoroughly. Some of the stock stuff like the Creative stuff can cause problems. If you haven't already, update your BIOS and vBIOS. But mostly just run a clean install, all you need to know is in the sticky for most problems.

Reply 4 : G73JH Issues Playing games

Update your gpu drivers first.

Reply 5 : G73JH Issues Playing games

Well, first off, update your BIOS to 213 and get the updated vBIOS on that unit so you can use the newest drivers.

See my sig links for more info.

Reply 6 : G73JH Issues Playing games

Sounds like simple driver issues to me. Sounds like something that would happen if your video drivers weren't installed correctly or weren't 100 percent compatible.

Reply 7 : G73JH Issues Playing games

yeah, something is up... I play a few of those games and have had zero issues. Bad Co 2 was awesome from start to finish on high settings! You don't have the Creative drivers installed and are running Steam do you? that caused issues on the stock drivers and bios....

Airport Express no valid ip

Hi, My friend recently got a Mac desktop computer and had a netgear router with a comcast motorola modem. Well she wants to stream netflix to a bluRay player so she got a new Motorola Extreme Surfboard modem and the apple guy at BB talked her into an Airport Express router instead of the Netgear N600 Wireless (and she's also going to get a wireless Sony BD). Well she got the modem setup nicely and says it's faster. But she can't get the Airport Express to work. It says no valid ip address. She called Apple care but they were closed. I don't know apples and I'm not there to see her screens. I'm not even sure she has the cords plugged in right.

Reply 1 : Airport Express no valid ip

it is a 24/7 operation.

I suspect that she is not actually reading the instructions that came with the Airport Express.

When she configures the AE, she should be telling it to establish a wireless network.

The layout should be, Incoming Cable to Router. Airport Express plugged into an Ethernet port on the Router.

I didn't think that Comcast would allow you to to change out Modems, they don't in my neck of the woods

P

Reply 2 : Airport Express no valid ip

Doesn't the Express completely replace her netgear router? Well anyway she tried putting her netgear router back on and now can't get it to work again either.

Reply 3 : Airport Express no valid ip

She had to turn off the wireless up in the upper right for her netgear to work again.

Reply 4 : Airport Express no valid ip

then that had nothing to do with her inability to connect.

Turning the wireless off has no effect if there is not a wireless signal there to connect to.

Now that she has the Netgear router working again, she connects the Express to her wired network and configures it.
That establishes a wireless network to which the Bluray Player can connect to.

Unless she wants to go completely wireless, no wired capability at all, then the Express would replace the Netgear. This severely restricts what other peripherals you can connect to your network, printers, DVR's, etc.

P

Reply 5 : Airport Express no valid ip

FYI - I went over today to help her and after 5 calls to Apple Care (they're only open 6-6pm pacific) and talking to 2 senior techs the last tech decided it was a bad Airport Express. So we went back to Best Buy and exchanged it. She just called me and this one is working fine so far and staying connected. The other one kept losing the internet. We'd call support and get it working and right after hanging up it would go down. Or if you closed Safari and reopened it, it would be down, etc. Very frustrating day.

nopal76,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue with your TV.

I'm unable to provide a diagnosis based solely on a picture. My recommendation would be to contact the Samsung customer service center at 800-SAMSUNG to have a technician come out and inspect your unit.

Gotta love the "Battery options jack up the price" con. No (shat) sherlock . Batteries are expensive no matter where you buy them. At least Lenovo gives the option of a slice battery.

It's ok, Engadget will just continue to dole out unconditional love to every single product made by Apple.

Reply 2 : X220 review by Engadget

they could have put "much fewer ways to jack up the price" as a pro for macbooks.

Reply 3 : X220 review by Engadget

8/10 after saying this in the intro:

"The point is, that all-too-familiar ThinkPad can deceive you with its boring business looks, but it's arguably one of the best laptops we've ever tested."

Both of these caveats could be improved with a more square, less widescreen display. Instead of using a 16:9 aspect ratio, Lenovo could have stayed with 16:10 using a WSXGA resolution (1440 x 900). This would require a deeper form factor increasing space available for the touchpad and increasing the vertical real estate for the display (assuming the same width), reducing the necessity for scrolling.

Reply 5 : X220 review by Engadget

Really? Because last I checked, they had almost no availability of the 1440x900 12" screens last generation.

Reply 6 : X220 review by Engadget

Stopped reading right here:

"The X220 is the first laptop we've reviewed with Intel's new Sandy Bridge 2.5GHz Core i5-2520M processor, and like the Core i7-powered MacBook Pro, the power surge is noticeable. When it came to using the ultraportable for our everyday tasks -- writing this review in Microsoft Word, chatting in Trillian, checking our Twitter feed in TweetDeck, working with ten or so tabs open in Internet Explorer 9, and doing some light photo editing in GIMP -- the entire system was incredibly zippy."

It is Engadget. Here is how they rank computers:

If it is a Mac, rank it between 8/10 and 10/10.

If it is not a Mac, rank it between 1/10 and 8/10.

Not to nitpick, but the X220 has a 12.5" display.

At any rate, I was remarking *if* Lenovo would have spec'd such a display. I am not saying there exists that size and resolution atm.

They mention their test model comes with USB 3.0. Did they review an i7 model? Or can you get USB 3.0 with i5?

Poor Performance Nvidia Op.

I have a

M11xR2 from Dell (AW)

Intel i7

4gb Ram

Win7 Ult.

Nvidia 335m ver.160.66 // DirectX10

I've already checked a ton of Forums about Optimus and M11xr2, and I wouldnt bother to start a thread if i didnt checked other formus and threads.

I usualy got good performance but since a fresh install of Windows I can't get that performance back on track.

I DID :

-Upgrade/Downgrade the driver

-Check if Nvidia kicks in ( it does )

-Tried Whitelist

-Use overall high performace in the panel

-Activate PhysX

Basicaly I get VERY poor performance and low FPS on old game like the first MassEffect and newer games like MOHonor hitting the 20 and lower on action.

Any suggestion, Help, ideas ?

Keyboard Lag Debugging

Time for a new problem, I'm sick of looking at Hairy Donuts.

I did some research on this problem, and I found this information on the ATI Hotkey Poller:

"Atiedxx.exe and atiesrxx.exe are the AMD External Events Client Module and AMD External Events Service Module. Both processes are executed when the Windows Service AMD External Events Utility is started. This service was known as the ATI Hotkey Poller in Windows XP and Windows Vista."

Now, I don't know about you, but I sure don't use any hotkeys with CCC, so I disabled both processes, and typed up a nice long document and noticed the only mistakes in the document were my own typos. I noticed a very noticeable drop in dropped characters, so I wanted to share the love.

For a more permanent fix and more info on what ATI installs with CCC, see this link.

Have fun experimenting and let me know if this helps.

Reply 1 : Keyboard Lag Debugging

I for one appreciate you flashing the brains out of your laptop and running Hairy Donut Tests for us. I notice keyboard lag right away. I will disable and test tonight. I'll report back.

Reply 2 : Keyboard Lag Debugging

Interesting find Chastity.

Reply 3 : Keyboard Lag Debugging

One thing I have noticed since day one is that, while I occasionally miss keys, if I lightly press individual keys on the corners they will consistently not register. It's very hard to distinguish between which of these keystrokes are missed because of hardware and those where I didn't press the key hard enough.

Reply 4 : Keyboard Lag Debugging

Wow, nobody has any feedback on this yet?!

Reply 5 : Keyboard Lag Debugging

I disabled the external events thing. I never noticed keyboard lag before and I don't notice any now.

I type at over 200 WPM on a normal day.

Reply 6 : Keyboard Lag Debugging

I still notie the keyboard missed keystroke issue and typing 30-45 wpm. I have to type at 10-15 wpm or it to not miss keystrokes. Honestly, I think this is more important to fix than the GSOD issue since the GSOD issue is patched by old drivers

Uninstall the synaptics drivers and you'll be rid of the lag for the most part while still having a working (albeit very unresponsive and "dull") touchpad while this is worked out.

More important then the lag is the fact that it registers all keystrokes without the synaptics drivers.

g73sw missing keystrokes

My g73sw keeps missing keystrokes when i'm typing fast and its super annoying. i know this was a problem on the earlier models but i thought they resolved it with a bios update. is there a known solution for the g73sw?

Reply 1 : g73sw missing keystrokes

Nope, nothing yet. Maybe your hand is sitting on the touchpad, the touchpad is rather large. Turn palm check up, if you havn't already.

Reply 2 : g73sw missing keystrokes

I think there's something wrong with the logic circuit used for the PS2 controller on the motherboard. It obviously doesn't run in parallel for some reason (taking key press and mouse moments at the same time).

Reply 3 : g73sw missing keystrokes

When did you buy ur G73SW. I thought G73SW has flaw in its CPU i7 2630QM. Thats why i canceled my order of G73SW and wait until the problem is fixed.

Reply 4 : g73sw missing keystrokes

Welcome to your defective 2000 dollar unit. You can see the 90 page Beta Bios "Keyboard Fix" thread for more frustration and unanswered questions Sorry to hear that you're one of the unlucky few. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do unless you demand a replacement laptop via RMA, which I doubt they would do. If you're under store warranty, RUN and return it and see if the next one is any better. Test at the store.

Reply 5 : g73sw missing keystrokes

So the problem exists on some units, but not all?

Reply 6 : g73sw missing keystrokes

only a small % of units... it's a devious issue but apparently fixable with a BIOS update

Reply 7 : g73sw missing keystrokes

Really sad to see this on the brand new g73sw units. This has been an ongoing issue with all g73s for the past few generations.

Every time people say, a bios update fixes it, or reinstalling the touchpad drivers, or removing the touchpad drivers and going with microsofts drivers, or disabling the trackpad in bios or using an external keyboard.

The bottom line is that the last two (disable the trackpad or use an external keyboard) are the only ones that have worked 100% of the time.

I was hoping with the new motherboard required for sandybridge they would fix it but apparently not.

In my experience its fairly common, ive only found ONE machine at a store that didnt have the problem and 4-5 that it was quite easy to duplicate on.

Guess I'm going with the msi unit afterall, what a shame.

Reply 8 : g73sw missing keystrokes

Wow that is just sad...

Reply 9 : g73sw missing keystrokes

I'm not getting any missed keystrokes on my SW, ofc, I wonder if it only affects people with higher than 70wpm as I prob avg around 60.
